What outbound limits exist for e-mail senders?

To help us mitigate the impact of spammers, malware, and compromised accounts while accommodating the needs of most users, a few limits apply to sending UIndy e-mail messages.  If you have the need to send e-mail that exceeds these limits, please contact the Help Desk at help@uindy.edu or (317) 788-6145 for assistance in finding more suitable alternatives.

The following limits are in place regarding e-mail transfers:

  • One UIndy account may not send e-mail to more than 100 off-campus addresses within a 1 hour period.
  • No more than 100 recipients may be included in any single e-mail.
  • Attachments may not exceed 10MB per message*.

* E-mail systems convert attachments to a text-like format in order to transmit them.  This process is unfortunately inefficient and typically increases the size of an attachment by 30-100%.  A 10MB document may be converted to a 15MB e-mail attachment.  E-mail limits are enforced based on the size after conversion and this is considered in setting e-mail limits.  For this reason, e-mail attachments larger than 10MB may occasionally be accepted by the e-mail server.  IS recommends limiting attachments to 10MB in all cases due to limitations that may exist on the recipient's e-mail server.
